THE NEEDS OF THE MANY...... February 12, 2008 David Penhaligon (Wiltshire, England) 16 out of 17 found this review helpful
I finished watching the 'Enterprise' series yesterday - didn't see when on TV & have been watching over the last year or so - and after I had got over the shock of how that ended I slipped the first disk of this into my brand new HD DVD player. The quality makes it feel like the series was made in the recent past but 'The Man Trap' & 'Charlie X' soon reminded me of my discovery of Sci-Fi when I was a small boy in the 60's. It is a truly fantastic release based on what I have seen so far, with the improvements only enabling the series to stand the test of time in the 21st Century and enable it to be judged alongside the newer series. I empathise with those who think this series should not have been 'messed with' but believe the original will never be forgotten and that this will serve to bring its glory to younger generations today. Watch with an open mind and enjoy again.
Trek HD Remastered September 11, 2007 Saul Del (Somewhere in Scotland) 22 out of 25 found this review helpful
So at last the remastered Trek episodes make it to British shores. After the debacle that was 'Enterprise' paramount had a big issue how do we make Trek popular again? Answers go back to your original source material and reboot! The original and the best Trek get a new lease of life. Remastered for HD transmission with all new special effects, this new tarted up 'Trek' does the business. In the USA of the remastered episodes have been a huge success updating the retro Trek for new audiences. Yes the polystyrene sets are still there, yes the rubber monster costumes are still there, but these have even been added too. In arena you will see the Gorn blink for example and in a certain scene in the 'Naked Time' the old 60's buttons and chronometer are replaced with new buttons and a digital display and you will see 'Where no man has gone before' as you have never seen it before. Thing was paramount have only realised that the remastered 'Trek' was hot property and got caught on the hop earlier this year when they had to change the remastered schedule from doing episodes across all the seasons to concentrating on the first season in order to get it out on DVD in time for xmas. The USA version of the first season will contain the episodes remastered for HD as well as the episodes in the standard format so non HD TV owners can enjoy. With the next Trek movie going back to the 23rd century for a reboot it may be time to boldly go again.
Excellent quality, excellent set November 21, 2007 Bill Shakespeare (UK) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
Some might say a little pricey, but the set certainly feels like a special release. The packaging is much smaller than you'd think from the pictures. First things first, the episodes. Wow. Star Trek never looked this good. Even the normal DVD side is very impressive. The episodes look so clean you can see the glue where Mr. Spocks ears were stuck on. As for the new effects. They have mixed criticism. My own view is this, watching the episodes is like watching a new wonderful show. It's like these episodes have the budget of a feature film now. The Enterprise looks amazing, the best part is the style and look has been retained. It just looks like the episodes had more money to play with. A bit like the way the 1960s Irwin Allen shows had more impressive minature work because they had more money. Now Trek looks like it has a budget to do it justice. There are a few special feature including some behind the scenes stuff I haven't got to yet, but I'm very pleased with this set. Don't forget, this set includes normal DVDs as well as HD-DVDs. You don't need a special player to watch the episodes. So in this sense, no matter who wins the format war. DVDs will still be around.
BEAM IT UP SCOTTY December 2, 2007 KM WHITEHOUSE (ENGLAND) 11 out of 13 found this review helpful
The original and best Star Trek series now matches up with the movies & later shows now thanks to new CGI special effects. If you are one of those die-hard Trekkies who hate the idea of the updated version of the original, then don't buy it and stop putting this version down. The only thing I find wrong with this box set is the price, it would have been better to put the set out as two different sets on DVD and HD DVD instead of double sided discs. The way the sales are going HD DVD & Blu-ray it looks as though both formats will end up like Betamax & Video 2000 - extinct. You really need to buy this set for yourself and see what a difference a little TLC & CGI have done for this show.
