Amazon.co.uk Review Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

FANTASTIC! A must for any Indy fan September 12, 2008 Ms. C. M. Bass (UK) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I think some peoples comments on her are a little unfiar. Yes, I dont agree that this film in as good as the originals, however, you really need to look at it as a film on its own. No one can expect the same as the old classics, esp as Mr Ford is many many years older. I thought the acting was fantasic, it is action packed and still has room for a little humour. Top film, a must for any Indy / Harrison Ford fan : )
great fun August 27, 2008 Mr. R. W. Graham (Lincoln, U.K.) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
ok, so indiana jones and the kingdom and the kingdom of the crystal skull may not be up there with the likes of schindler's list. it won't win any major awards at the oscars or anything. but it is great fun. in other words, good old fashioned entertainment that should leave you with a great big silly grin after the film's finished. great performances all the way, harrison ford still as good as ever as indy. but as much fun as this was, please no more. hate to say it, but harrison ford is getting a bit too old and they just about get away with this one. there is too much reliance on cgi and the ending screams close encounters but if you can just switch your brain off for 2 hours and just go with it, you should enjoy it.
BETTER THAN 'TEMPLE OF DOOM' October 30, 2008 S. Hills (England) 9 out of 13 found this review helpful
The criticism surrounding this movie, in my opinion, is unjustified. The fact is that this film arrives 19 years after `The Last Crusade' and you just can't turn back the clock. But for me being a massive Indy fan, I was enamoured with the latest offering and in my opinion it is better than `Temple of Doom' I felt the opening sequence was the second best opening sequence in the franchise after `Raiders'. Yes, even with the `fridge scene'! The film was exciting, intriguing and well directed. Criticisms? Well the film could have done with another action sequence and a little less CGI. I personally found Shia Labeouf perfectly fine in his role, even if he was a little lifeless. Ray Winstone's part was completely underdeveloped and Cate Blanchett's performance has been massively overrated. Harrison Ford gives the best performance by far. Lucas, Spielberg and Ford have delivered a highly enjoyable action/adventure movie that is a worthy addition to the Indy Franchise. I loved it and I look forward to the next one!
Great! June 19, 2008 Mr. R. C. Auty (England) 11 out of 17 found this review helpful
Does anybody watch films for the pure enjoyment anymore? I do, and I really enjoyed this film. Harrison Ford was great and well supported by the rest. Yes a bit OTT and the CGI was a bit ropey, but they didn't detract from the fun. Loved the scene where Indy survived the nuclear blast, brilliantly done and funny to boot. I'll be ordering a copy!
"Your A Teacher?" "Part-Time" - Indy's Back November 14, 2008 Martin (Basingstoke, Hampshire, UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Occasionally a film revival never goes well (Star Wars Prequel Trilogy springs to mind) But that is not the case with "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"... First off - The one problem everyone i have met has is the fact that the story involves Alien Technology and although it does take some of the old magic of what Indy stood For it also gives something that more than makes up for it... it is something Indy has never really encountered before... Also my fedora goes off to Harrison Ford, who, even at the age of 60, still makes Indiana Jones 4 as Fun and Exciting as the first 3 Indy Films Were. as well i would like to give appreciation to Shia Labouf as Mutt, who shines as a possible choice for Harrison to hand the Torch onto, Karen Allen for a 5-Star return as Marion Ravenwood As Well as Cate Blanchett as the Villain who is as terrifying as Her Role as Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings films... All in all, "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is worth a watch on 2 fronts - it will have everything that Indy fans have grown to love - Action, Adventure with elements of Comedy. whereas the people who have never seen an indy film, it is good as a standalone piece. wether it is rented or bought - catch this film...
