Amazon.co.uk Review
If you’ve got too many pre-conceptions of just how a Sherlock Holmes movie should pan out, then it’s probably best that you check them in before popping this latest version in your player. Starring Robert Downey Jr. in the title role and accompanied by Jude Law as Watson, this film dispenses with some of the conventions of Holmes, and instead starts turning him into something of a period action hero.

Downey Jr. is more than up to the challenge too. Early scenes in Sherlock Holmes are more Fight Club than sleuth-influenced, with the hand of director Guy Ritchie behind the camera being very clear. But the film soon settles down and starts to have some fun, with the able assistance of Mark Strong and Rachel McAdams, among the supporting cast.

Yet this is Downey Jr.’s show, and he doesn’t waste the opportunity. He’s an engaging leading man at the worst of times, and he’s clearly having a ball here. What’s more, it’s immensely satisfying when his Sherlock Holmes gets down to the business of solving crimes, even though there are some really quite impressive action sequences to work through first.

There are problems, of course. There’s not enough flesh on the bones of some of the characters, and the early part of the film feels very different from the latter stages. But there’s solid groundwork here for the inevitable franchise, and watching Downey Jr. reprise the role of Sherlock Holmes over the next few years should be really quite good fun too. --Jon Foster

This came in plenty of time for Father's Day, good value for money especially as it also had the digital copy included in the price!

5 out of 5 stars Sherlock Holmes - A New Take   July 5, 2010

Now this really is a new take on Sherlock Holmes, and is completely different from, for example, the Jeremy Bret characterisation. The plot is clever and devious; the dialogue fast and witty, and the acting convincing. I certainly thoroughly enjoyed this DVD. I thought the recreation of London in the 1895s was particularly good, and greatly added to the atmosphere of the whole presentation. If you are looking for a different version of SH, then give this some consideration - I hope there will be a sequel that is equally interesting.

Just a pointer to the amazing quality of the acting in Sherlock Holmes, when I first watched this I didn't realise that Holmes was played by an American (well done on a very convincing accent Downey Jr). I wish I could have seen it twice because this film is so full of banter, actions and beautifully pitched characters that you couldn't possibly catch everything on the first viewing.
Ok, so it's not the traditional image of the famous pair, but having now read the books I can see just how true this film is to the original stories. It jumps between action, the serious and the comedy and has something that everyone can enjoy. There are so many quotes from the books and Holmes and Watson's relationship is played out perfectly by Downey Jr and Law. It might not be your grandparent's idea of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson but it's a fresh view and it's certainly worth the watch, this new action-hero Holmes appealed to both me and my parents. What can I say? Roll on the next one!

I went to see Sherlock Holmes with small expectations after a friend told me it was not very good, and ended up loving it!

Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law are perfect in their parts and have a great chemistry. The dialogue is witty and fun and I love how this film shows a different side to the famous characters.

At no point was I bored or confused about the storyline. The pace of the film was perfect and just the right length I think.

There is action, romance and even some of the supernatural in this film so it is never boring. I would say you should definitely get this dvd - I know I will be!
