Amazon.co.uk Review Garry Marshall's 1988 drama about a 30-year friendship between two women, one wealthy (Barbara Hershey) and the other (Bette Midler) seeking her fortune in show business, is well written (based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart) and nicely textured in its contrast between the characters' separate destinies. When Hershey becomes ill with cancer, the film takes a predictably sentimental course, yet Marshall brings out the best in both actresses and catches some very fine drama. Beaches is a little too long, perhaps, but overall it is a fine experience. --Tom Keogh

Fantastic girly film! April 25, 2007 S. Dodd (UK) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
Boys don't get this film, it's definitely a chick flick! Most girls can relate to this best friend relationship portrayed in the film, that's why it is so watchable. This is a great film to watch with a bunch of your friends ... however be prepared to cry, I've watched this film a million times and still get weepy at the end. A definite must have for your DVD collection!
Grab your tissues April 26, 2006 film buff Dave (Hull, UK) 9 out of 10 found this review helpful
I have watched this film since the age of 20 and still it makes me cry 16 years later!! The clothes are very 80s, the hair is huge and the Divine Miss M's voice is never better. Its a great story about friendship through the years but I must warn you before you watch this film there are essentials to go with it - chocolate, wine and definately tissues - oh yeah and a good comedy DVD right after always helps - enjoy.
You cant beat it September 26, 2004 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This film will break your heart an make you a babbling mess on the floor. This will make you cry, its just so good. You totally believe it all, the acting is superb and its just a great film. Its tells the story of two girls from different backgrounds, and there struggle to grow up and make something of themselves. With a tearful twist at the end.
Heart Wrenching October 15, 2004 Mr President (Glasgow) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Its said that a successful film is one which makes the audience care about the characters. By heck Beaches does it with room to spare. I first saw this film when i was about 8 years old, 12 years ago, now there's a thought! With maturity and greater understanding i now appreciate Beaches more. As can be taken from the other reviews the film centers around two childhood friends who grow up together as penpals and when they need each other in adult life not even continents could keep them apart. The relationship between the two is so well developed and this is what makes the ending so unbearably sad and tear jerking. And what review would be complete without the fantastic song Wind Beneath my Wings getting a mention, perfectly placed within the film and by itself a good enough reason to buy the Beaches soundtrack. Its a tale of a friendship that many should aspire to achieve and its message of being there for one another from good times and bad, is one that can appeal to everyone. Thoroughly enjoyable and recommended to everyone.
The greatest movie about friendship EVER June 28, 2005 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
Wow. When i was growing up my mother was an absolute fanatic about this movie but i was never allowed to watch it for the fear that it would make me cry. about 10 years later at a very mature age of 18 I decided to rebell and watch it. What a movie. It keeps with the simple wining formula that love and life changes but true friends will always be there for each othe. Be warned - my mother was right - i cried like a baby for three days straight. The movie is so brilliant that you really can relate it to yourslef and your own experiences which makes it all the worthwile watching it - plus Bette Middlers voice is amazing as always. In my oppinion definately a movie worth watching!
