A superb, well priced security suite July 19, 2008 John Nunn (Coventry, U.K.) 30 out of 30 found this review helpful
OneCare is not just an Antivirus product it is a all encompassing security suite including features like antivirus, anti-spyware, and firewall, as well as PC tuning features like backup, disk defragmentation, and so on. What makes OneCare unique is that it essentially provides many of the centrally-managed IT administrative functionality one might expect in a corporate environment, but to home users. But instead of providing a human administrator, Microsoft provides an Internet-based service that works continually and automatically and is always up to date. You only deal with OneCare, per se, when something goes wrong. And if something really goes wrong, Microsoft is providing support via phone, email, or Web chat. Windows Live OneCare features include: Anti-malware - Anti-Virus - Anti-Spyware - Firewall PC Performance - Hard drive defragmentation - Backup - Remove unnecessary files - PC Tune-up The cost of OneCare includes the ability to install on up to three separate pc's allowing all of your computers to be protected. There really is no better solution available especially at this price.
For Me It's Fantastic, But Is OneCare For You? Maybe! January 7, 2008 S. Islam (UK) 30 out of 32 found this review helpful
I'll try make this quick, I've had many antivirus and firewalls in the past, most times I have had to run multiple applications to protect my computer, anti-virus, anti-spyware, adware you name it. Most times I'd end spending 10 to 15 minutes a day updating all this these applications making sure it is all working correctly e.g. check logs, update database, I was never sure if I was safe. OneCare really does do it all, and the best bit is, it does it by itself, updates all the firewall, spyware, adware, malware and what not.. From time to time it will state things need to be done e.g. back up, scan. If some how these are not in your interest you can turn off them. Simple status Green = Up-to-date - No Action Yellow = Safe = awaiting action Red = Dangerous = Need immediate action I see this as a simple friendly all round protection. Most importantly, I'm just like you, I want to use my computer to surf the net make purchases, read and send emails, and what not. This is what people really should think about, I mean do you want to spend all that time maintaining you computer rather thing using it... and I'll say it simple, regards to internet security OneCare take care of your computer while you use it, whereas most of the alternatives you need to take care of it before it can take care of you. It gets 5 star from me. A word for the Technical/Advance Users It's fantastic, but I won't over praise it for the advance users, here is a word of advice for those advance user, if you want to get in-depth and control as lot of things, OneCare won't let you, maybe in the future but not now. The firewall is easy its automatic, only accepts safe programs to use the net, (can be blocked if wanted) if its not in its safe list, it asks your permission, all which can be altered later, however if you allow it, it is saved and will be allowed. Some people prefer it to be asked every time, OneCare doesn't have this option, but to overcome it, you will need to delete it from the firewall policy. I must admit I do like the way it shares your printer, you could be away from you printer and as long as there is a OneCare computer connected to your printer it will print, which by the way I never seemed to get sorted via manual networking as before it was always temperamental. Is OneCare for you? New Users - YES Moderate Users - YES Regular Users - YES Everyday User - YES Advance User - Maybe Control Freaks - NO
Edit: Onecare being phased out. March 6, 2008 Rosemary Pointon 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
All I've written below still holds true, but potential new users should be aware that the product is to be phased out. This is from the developers' blog: "In order for us to focus on delivering this new security solution to millions of customers around the world, we have decided to phase out Windows Live OneCare and will discontinue retail sales of Windows Live OneCare subscription service beginning June 30, 2009. If you are a current OneCare subscriber, there is no action that you need to take at this time. "OneCare will continue to be available online to new and renewing subscribers at least until the new solution is available, for use on Windows XP and Windows Vista PCs. And Microsoft has committed to making sure you are protected for the life of your subscription. We'll provide more information and details as we get closer to June and the availability of the new solution. But again, there is no action that you need to take at this time. " ORIGINAL REVIEW: I've been using Onecare for nearly a year now without problems. Compared to other security suites I have used it has been very unintrusive. Sudden pop-ups offering warnings or prompts for action are rare, and its extensive database of recognised programs make it ideal for online gaming. The more cynical may say that the lack of pop-ups is down to the program not doing enough, but precautions I have taken would seem to contradict that notion. Because reports of early versions of Onecare held that protection against viruses wasn't among the best, I have regularly used online virus scanners and anti-spyware programs to double-check. I'm pleased to report that none of these has detected a single infection, so Onecare must be doing something right. One minor niggle: Given that the closing date for your subscription is perpetually displayed on Onecare's status screen, it was hardly necessary for the program to remind me that the sub has six months to run.
Does exactly what I want: protects my computer without draining resources August 3, 2008 Mr. K. P. Rogers (London, UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I am really pleased with this product. It is simple to use and integrates seamlessly with Windows (I use Vista), as one would expect as it is made by Microsoft. There is a firewall, antivirus, antispam, antispyware. Installation was a breeze and like all software of this type it sits in unobtrusive fashion in the system tray. I am particularly impressed with it not draining the computer's resources whilst it is running its scans. The scheduling of said scans is very straightforward. I had used ZoneAlarm for years and since my licence for that ran out I thought I'd give this a try. I don't think I'm going back to ZoneAlarm!
