5 out of 5 stars the perfect watch   October 29, 2006

Unless you're into scuba diving I can conceive of no reason to buy any watch more expensive than this one. It does everything and it costs less than a new battery and reseal. It's hard-wearing and it's so cheap that it doesn't matter if you lose or break it anyway. Plus, if you're in my age bracket, you can enjoy the retro appeal of wearing something that would have been considered super cool and hi-tech around 1981. 'Nuff said.

5 out of 5 stars Light, compact, low-cost, non-nonsense digital watch   June 21, 2007

I bought this watch because my last cheap Casio (purchased at a jewelry shop) had failed in the usual way - the plastic wriststrap split across, leaving me with an uncomfortable stub.

After a little browsing, I picked the W-59-1VX because it was the least expensive black plastic digital watch I could find. Yet, as a Casio, I knew it would work well, be easy to understand, and last for a good while. (Probably longer than the strap, at least...)

It does the basic things - keeps time to within about 30 seconds a week (at worst), is easy to adjust, has a backlight and stopwatch (up to 1 hour, so no marathons for you).

It was only when I had put it on that I noticed how small it is. Logically, that is a good thing - no one really wants to carry a great lump around on their wrist. Maybe it's a women's model, or maybe it's just no bigger than it has to be.

5 out of 5 stars The only watch you'll ever need!   October 12, 2007

I have just returned from 15 months of travelling around the world. I needed a watch for my journey and wanted something that would be
Reliable
Undesirable to theives
Indestructable

This watch easily forfils all of those requirements.

I noticed the first review I saw said something like "unless you want to scuba dive, this is the ideal watch for you". Not true! During my travels I spent 3 months diving as a divemaster in Malaysia and wore this watch throughout. It has been down to 40M and never let me down.

Brilliant.

If you really want the retro apeal, you need to go for the silver metal finished version... Nowhere near as hard wearing but looks cool.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect watch   March 19, 2008

I've had this for over 5 years now, and although the strap did break, the actual watch itself is perfectly functional. It has survived numerous cases of accidentally being thrown in the washing machine in a pocket, and general clumsy battering around, showing no battery deterioration either.

I found it also pretty comfortable to wear, since it is a pretty lightweight watch compared to some chunkier digital watches. Basically it just doesn't get in the way either thanks to its size.

It may not be fancy but it is superb value for money when it comes to the basic functionality and durability.

5 out of 5 stars No-frills watch   January 1, 2007

Not sure about being 'hi-tech' for 1981, but if you remember the watches that you used to get with big boxes of washing powder back in the 1980's, then this is the same watch!

High in 'retro' value if nothing else, this is a no-nonsense budget watch which does 'exactly what it says on the tin' so-to-speak... it tells you what the time is, will beep at you when you want it to with the alarm function, and you can time whatever you like with the stop-watch.

For the price you know you are getting a basic watch, but it is pretty hard-wearing and should last you quite a while. Perfect choice for giving yourself an 80s look, or as an emergency timepiece whilst your other watch is being repaired.
