Would lightning strike twice? Could it? The original, after all, was not merely a live album, but a fully-fledged cultural event--both in terms of sales and what it said about Diamond's popular appeal at that moment in time. Like Frampton Comes Alive (another phenomenon which inspired a belated sequel), it helped define a particular era in the hearts and minds of its audience. Fifteen years later, Diamond stepped up to the plate again, and while many of the expected favourites--"Song Sung Blue", "Sweet Caroline"--make reappearances, the set-list also featured some of the singer's later, less cherishable material. There's the lamentable "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" (sans Barbra, fortunately); the cringeworthy "Forever In Blue Jeans"; and "Heartlight", a song inspired by the singer's passion for ET. Age has lent Diamond a sort of crabby grace: this version of "I Am . . . I Said"--arguably, his "My Way"--actually surpasses the original, its brassy sense of defiance benefitting from the singer's maturity. But others ("Cracklin' Rosie", a perfunctory "Soolaimon") simply serve to diminish his original achievement. --Andrew McGuire

I was never really a fan of Neil Diamond, but all the same i knew about some of his more famous material like Forever in Blue Jeans, Love on the Rocks & Sweet Caroline. These for me are the type of older songs which everyone knows about, regardless of their music taste and which everyone sings along to after a bit of the amber nectar or on the karaoke. I borrowed this CD off one of my friends, more out of curiosity than anything else, but was amazed when i played it. This is without doubt the best live piece of music that i have heard, and all of the songs on the CD sound exactly like they appear on his albums. Some live artists that i have listened to have changed the tunes somewhat in order to gear their songs up for being sung live, but not in this instance. My particular favourites are song sung blue and I am I said, both of which i had never heard of before. Neil Diamond has one of the most recognizable voices in music, and certainly one of the best. Every minute of music on this CD is well worth listening to.....more than once, and would be a worthwhile addition to any record collection.

Hot August Night 2, is the follow up album to Hot August Night 1 which was one f the best and highly acclaimed live albums in the 70's.
The sequel recorded in the Greek Theatre in LA, maybe not as good as the original, but still contains some of Neil's early greats like Cracklin Rosie, Sweet Caroline and I am I Said amongst others.Over all this album is ok but as it gets going Neils voice begins to get tired and very rough indeed spoiling some of his great tracks, however this is a bad thing its just putting more of Neils emotion into the tracks, something wich Neils live perfomances are famed. If you like Neils Live albums then get this one, it may not be his best but Its very good all the same! Craig Giles
