Good, but not perfect March 17, 2000 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is an excellent carol collection, jam-packed with hit favourites, and performed well up to the usual high standard of Winchester Cathedral Choir's performances. The arrangements are all excellent, except for a few. However, I am not too happy about a few things. The First Nowell is sung in an arrangement that seems to bring out the negative qualities of the carol - in particular its dullness and repetitiveness. The David Willcocks harmonisation sung by King's on their O Come All Ye Faithful album is better. Moreso, there have been brutal verse cuts in carols such as Once in Royal David's City, which has suffered the most of all, with three verses mercilessly butchered. Also, the brass quintet seems to be slackening when they perform with the choir, and the recording places the choir a little bit backward. I would prefer the microphones to be a little bit closer. However, I think that there are a few plusses. For the hymns such as O Come All Ye Faithful, Once in Royal David's City, O Little Town of Bethlehem and Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, David Hill contributed excellent new descants well in the style of Willcocks in the Carols for Choirs books. When I listen to While Shepherds Watched, We Three Kings and O Little Town, I get memories of happy times I used to know. What makes this CD appealing is the treble solos in the tender and touching carols such as Silent Night and In the Bleak Midwinter. (I do wish that the standard lyrics were used in the former carol, sung to a beautiful arrangement, like the latter.) Overall, I recommend this carol collection, but it should be cautiously approached.
