Amazon.co.uk Editors were not the only band suckling on Joy Division's bleak teat in 2005 when they released their debut The Back Room, and they never initially seemed the ones most likely to succeed either. They were like a pencil sketch of gothic depression, too tidy, too clean, too neatly attired to attain any lasting emotional credibility. But there was just one problem with that cursory diagnosis; the incendiary skinny-ribbed barrage of short, sharp, repetitive and achingly insistent singles, titled with an absolute maximum of two syllables as if to ram that point home. There was zero puppy fat on Editors' bones, but what they did carry was toned and worked to perfection. But even considering that discipline, the competent grandeur of its follow up, An End Has a Start, takes you aback. Awash with constellation-scraping omnipresence, opening track "Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors" seems all around you at once, building, lifting and frankly doing a better impression of late 80s U2-sized epic than Coldplay mustered on X&Y. The album rebounds between that sense of rounded, accessible awe and the more industrious pounding in the engine room that they perfected on their debut, the latter particularly demonstrable on the title track and a truly hammering "Escape the Nest". Tom Smith's rudimentary lyrics and forced baritone may lack some of the poetic depth that the music craves, but like their overall style he directs what he does possess with admirable precision. -- James Berry

Magnificent September 12, 2007 aubergine (UK) 14 out of 15 found this review helpful
This is definitely my favourite album for a long time. Editors have been a bit of a slow burn for me, I didn't know whether to like them or not because they sounded like Joy Division, but eventually decided that wasn't a bad thing. I found myself rushing out to buy this the day it came out and wasn't disappointed, I keep listening to it and still love it. It's definitely a bigger sound that the first album, which I like, and there's a lot of emotion in it - some of the songs made me want to cry, but in a good way, and I can't think of any other album I could say that about.
I am addicted! September 26, 2007 R. Urena (Torrance, CA USA) 8 out of 10 found this review helpful
I can't get enough of this album. I have already memorized all the songs. The guitars are amazing, the drums: a heartbeat. These songs give me the goosebumps. It makes me feel the way U2 once did. They don't remind me in the least to Joy Division or Interpol. I mean, sure, Tom has the same monotone voice that gets compared to those bands. But, Editors are different. I don't find Editors to be as depressing as Joy Division. They invoke powerful emotion in me. I feel so awesome when I hear track 5 "When Anger Shows" in my car. I sing along and it's so brilliant!! I can't wait for album #3. I saw them play live 2 days ago at the Wiltern and I have to say, very few bands can rock harder live than they do on their album. The Editors did just that. They blew me away. My body is still sore from all the dancing and singing and screaming I did. Thank you, UK for the brilliant bands.
Once you Start, you won't want it to End! June 27, 2007 S. Fitzell (London, U.K.) 8 out of 11 found this review helpful
When a band release a great first album, then attempt to follow this up with a second album, I'm always sceptical that their debut can be matched or even improved upon. The Back Room was a great album, so naturally I was eagerly awaiting the release of 'An End Has A Start' with great anticipation. But I also had a sense of scepticism - could they produce an album as good as, or even better than The Back Room? Answer: Yes. I sat down for the first time to listen through the 10 tracks in a row and immediately found myself going back and repeating tracks! 'The Racing Rats' is probably the highlight of the album for me, its a superb up-tempo track reminiscent of 'Blood' and 'Munich' on their debut album, and will almost certainly be released as a future single. The album's title track 'An End Has A Start' is another hum-dinger of a tune, which I also hope is released as a single as it will no doubt be a success. Other great tracks to look out for are 'Bones', the poignant 'Weight of the World', and the quite magnificent 'When Anger Shows'. Even 'Smokers Outside The Hospital Doors', which was a great comeback single and has undoubtedly attracted people to buy the album, almost seems a distant memory now that I have listened to the whole albumn! The only sticky point is that a few of the slower tracks such as 'Push Your Head Up Towards The Air' and 'Well Worn Hand' are a little tedious and boring to listen to, but this of course is just my opinion. Suffice to say, The Editors have pulled a rabbit out of a hat with this album. Although its fairly short at 10-tracks, it is quite simply a little gem. I would thoroughly recommend this for anyone who liked The Back Room. My ticket to the V Festival in August this year has just become even more valuable with the release of this album - well done guys!!!
Amazing, Buy It! June 30, 2007 Angela Richards 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
After a cracking first album, I did wonder if this would be a 'difficult second album'. Actually, An End Has A Start is even better in my opinion. It differs from their first album in that it is more epic in sound, sounding like Joy Division fused with U2, and I wouldn't be surprised if, as a consequence, they become massive. The best songs in my opinion are the title track, When Anger Shows, and The Racing Rats. Push Your Head Towards The Air manages to do what REM's Everybody Hurts does, it's a lovely healing song. Ignore the silly NME review and buy it.
Unbelievable, its even better than "The Back Room" May 26, 2007 Mr.RIPoff (Germany) 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
I managed to receive a Promo copy of the Editors' new CD 4 weeks before its official release. I didn't expect too much after their strangely uninspired-sounding 1st single taken off the album, "Smokers outside the hospital doors" (cool title though). This song also kicks off the album and after that you are in for a treat. The title track, "An End has a Start" is an instant classic, similar to the highlights of the first album, "Munich" or Blood", its melody and rhythm just takes everybody by storm. A very likely 2nd single from the album, but things keep getting even better on this sophomore effort: "The Weight of the World" is a remake of an early demo and they totally nailed this song in the studio, "Bones" is also already known from their live-shows from the last years and the studio version is even more impressive and addictive than the live and accoustic versions that were floating around the web so far. Maybe the second best track on the album is tracks #5, "When Anger Shows", a smart and melodic anthem, not unlike "Camera" from the first album. "The Racing Rats" also keeps the super-high quality level and so do the following tracks. The song that will probably push Editors over the edge and will earn them super-stardom (well, at least in a perfect world) is track #9, "Spiders". Another ballad that crawls up on you like...well, a spider and keeps growing and growing on you until you can't imagine any song ever to come out to be that beautiful. People were afraid that Editors will sell out with their 2nd album and that the more expensive production and longer recording time will spoil the spirit of dark and gloomy heores of the dark underground, but on the contrary. The album is a continuation of the first album. They kept their style, perfected it even more and I'm sure it will also be a commercial success. They are not the new Coldplay or Snow Patrol, this album puts the last albums of these bands to shame. Well done guys!!!
