Amazon.co.uk Review Newton Faulkner has toured with Paulo Nutini and James Morrison. You hear this fact far more often than you have to--it might have made sense to expose his palatable acoustic tinkerings to those massive audiences, but that association leaves too simplistic an impression. He specialises in partially progressive, free-willed folk-pop that is on one hand too cosy and warm for mass consumption--there's only so much space around the beach campfire--but on the other it's so accessible, so infectious, so feel-good that how could it not be headed for every other car stereo in the country, windows rolled down (weather permitting). It's not cutting edge by any stretch of the imagination; he constantly reminds of the acoustic balladry of 90s soft-metal bands Extreme and Mr Big (or at least the songs "More than Words" and "To Be with You") via modern day peers like Ben Harper, but Newton Faulkner comes with a fertile imagination and an enjoyably flexible range to dress that foundation up. His gravelly cover of Massive Attack's "Teardrop" is notable and Jack Johnson's a good reference for the percussive plucking of tunes like "Gone in the Morning", "To the Light" and "Feels Like Home". There are very few 17-track albums that couldn't be improved by losing six tracks, but the consistency on Hand Built by Robots is admirable and hints at a long term talent. --James Berry

He will blow you away! August 9, 2007 Chipstick (Buckinghamshire) 27 out of 31 found this review helpful
I bought Newton Faulkner's cd on spec, having seen it advertised on television, and boy am I glad I did! His voice is somewhat reminiscent of Paolo Nutini's in it's richness and bluesey edge. However while there are similarities to Paolo in a few of his songs, Newton's songs are far more harmony rich and accomplished musically, with beautiful acoustic guitar and subtlely beautiful arrangements. If you like the surf sound of Jack Johnson or Kalai then you are likely to find his style readily accessible. However, don't expect another Jack Johnson! No way, this guy has more depth: his voice has a real aching passion that hits you in the same way as Damien Rice's voice and lyrics do. Newton Faulkner is very, very special. A rare talent. Uplifting, moving, heart-rending. I think he is going to be massive (he certainly deserves to be!) I urge you to buy this!

Went to see John Mayer in the Albert Hall recently and Newton Faulkner opened for him. He was on for about a hour and every piece was superb. He is an excellent entertainer and well worth listening to. A very talented guitar player. He gave John Mayer a very tough act to follow. Naturally I bought the album on my way home. It has been being played in the car ever since and quite a few people have been converted as a result. Buy it and I think you will be too.
Outstanding young talent October 25, 2007 Mr. M. Watson (Lancashire, England) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I saw the TV advert and thought WOW write that name down I loved the sound of his voice. I internet searched the Album Chart, listened to some tracks and bought it the same day. By far the best album I have bought this year. Very haunting voice, not the greatest guitar playing but that doesn't detract from a mesmeric debut. Buy it.
Shouldn't just be known as the guy who covers spongebob! July 31, 2007 P. Burgham (Chester, England) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
I've been looking forward to hearing more material by Newton since seeing him support James Morrison in February. On the night I bought the UFO E.P. and absolutely loved the songs on it. I bought Hand Built By Robots yesterday and wasn't disappointed. My personal favourite songs at the moment are Feels Like Home, I Need Something, Dream Catch Me and Teardrop. I know that cover versions of classic songs like Teardrop aren't to everyone's taste but if you like cover versions like those on the Radio 1 Live Lounge this eclipses many of those covers! I think there are a number of other great songs on there and I'm sure my list of favourites will increase with even more listens. Having seen him live I think that some of the sounds that Newton produces from what most of the time is just an acoustic guitar is fantastic! If you like the album definitely go and see him live as well. I'd recommend anyone who likes the current crop of singer songwriters developing in the UK like James Morrison and Paolo Nutini and other artists like Ben Harper to check this out.
