Cheap and cheerful but potentially a little bit damp! July 14, 2008 Ms. Emily Bacon (North Wales) 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I spent a long time looking around the internet for the best possible combination of space, light weight and value for money available. I eventually settled on the Gelert Rocky 2 as it was cheap enough and relatively light with a lot of sleeping space. I was not disappointed with the space issue. There is plenty of room for two plus bags and the porch area with ground sheet means extras like shoes etc can be kept off the ground. There is also a good amount of head room so you can sit up without crippling your neck (although I'm not the tallest of people so perhaps that's easier for me anyway). It isn't the lightest tent ever made but, for the price/space, it seemed reasonable and we didn't have too much trouble carrying it by hand wandering around north wales for a couple of days. It would also easily fit into a good sized pack (say 65l) plus one person's luggage but not two! Pitching was easy and it was lovely and easy to pack away again too - an important feature as often the bags are so small it's a nightmare getting the thing back in! Stability is good. It was quite windy when we used it but it seemed pretty solid. Quite a lot of condensation in the morning. It wasn't terrible but I'm sure there are better tents out there for this. The only real gripe I have with this tent, and it's a fairly funamental one, is the guy rope arrangement. There are no guys on the sides, only the corners which meant the fly sheet tended to sag a little and touch the sides of the inner tent. This could be a problem if it rained! Of course, skilled pitching can minimise this problem but we are both experienced campers and we still had trouble. The double inner door is a nice feature as you can sit and look out at the world without letting the midgies in but it can be a bit confusing fumbling around in the dark with two zips when you're busting for the loo! This wouldn't put me off though really as you soon get used to it. All in all this is a canny little tent with one rather important design flaw. If you're planning to camp in all weathers I'd seriously suggest something with a better layout of guy ropes!
