Amazon.co.uk Review
As learning aids go, they don't get much better than the Explorer Globe from LeapFrog. Touch the globe with the electronic pen included and it will spring to life, naming the country or ocean you've touched and giving you one or more of a number of facts--ocean depth (in feet and metres), country capital, population, land area, continent, even music (a rather eclectic mix!). Touch it again, and you'll get another nugget of information.

You can choose which information you want on precisely which area of the globe, from: name, capital, population, area, high point, money, music and continents/countries/states. The globe will also compare one place with another and tell you the distance in miles between them, if you touch two points in succession.

But the real potential of the globe lies in its game, "Eureka: a Game of Discovery". Touch the Eureka button, then choose from continents, countries, country capitals, states, state capitals or a free-for-all random round. Set the game going and you must find the points that the globe instructs you to find. You are running against the clock and the instructions and accompanying music become increasingly quicker as you progress. The multi-player option means healthy competition can be introduced and as you progress, you can choose between "tourist", "frequent flyer" and "globetrotter" levels, which become increasingly difficult.

The voice recording on the globe has an American accent but diction is clear and precise and in no way does this detract from the final product. This is a fast, furious and fun way to learn geography, (physical, human, political and economic as well as musical!) and though aimed at children, adults may be surprised at how healthy it is to do a little revision now and again. As well as being an effective learning aid, the globe can be a fun, family game. Simply superb and suitable for children aged 7 to 77! --Lucie Naylor

5 out of 5 stars fun and education for the whole family   September 11, 2004

we bought this for our daughter when she was 5. she wanted to travel so we thought she could find out about places she wanted to go. we were worried she may be a little young for the globe but we needn't have. she loved it and nearly 3 years later still loves it. the whole family play the eureka games ( eg.finding capital cities against the clock)which can get quite competitive amongst the adults. grandparents and visitors and her friends are all equally impressed with it when they visit. it's the only toy she has been bought that she actually looks after!
she has chosen to go to italy next year (based on the flying time etc)
since my daughter received her globe i know at least 4 other people who have bought one on our recomendation.
as some of the other reviewers have pointed out the american accent is the only draw back but it is clear and audible.

My 7 year old son received this for Christmas and within a day could navigate his way quickly around the world, locating countries like Kazakstan, Ukraine, Cuba, Haiti, Vietnam - you name it! My husband and I have had great fun, and learned a lot, trying to outdo each other on the competitive level. My daughter likes listening to the different music from each country and overall it's the most amazing 'toy'. I would recommend that every family should have one of these!!

5 out of 5 stars Superb educational value and great family fun - if it works!   January 31, 2005

As described in the other reviews, now shipping with a fully English voice / accent, this globe provides enormous family fun while teaching us a great deal. My 8 year old daughter loves it and will soon be overtaking her parents in the quizzes at this rate.
My only problem with this product is that I'm ordering my third one in less than a month, having received 2 defective ones. This could be bad luck but it might also be a sign that the interactive system is not very robust. Fingers crossed ....

Every child in Britian should have one of these....let me rephrase that, Everyone in Britian should have one of these. Fantastic fun, the amount of facts is breathtaking, not just for the kids. The only drawback is the American accent as it has a few pronounciation differences from us Brits. I'm off to travel the world again, see you around.

5 out of 5 stars Highly Addictive   August 15, 2002

The Explorer Globe must definitely be one of the most educational and entertaining purchases you could make. The vast encyclopaedia of information it holds can keep you interested for hours at a time. My ten year old sister received hers for Christmas last year, only to have it taken straight from her by our 19 year old brother. I think her first play with it was on the 3rd January!
The only downside to it I can think of is that it refers to some of the countries with their American names. You can then spend the whole allocated time searching for a country you've never heard of. But apart from that... a "Must Buy".
