Amazon.co.uk Review In a nutshell: Although it was announced more than a decade ago this demonstrates that the best things really do come to those that wait, with the most original and technically advanced first person shoot `em-up in years. The lowdown: Although it was conceived at a time when 3D graphics cards were still optional the basic idea behind the Prey portal technology is still the same as it ever was, allowing you to instantly step from one world to another in the game. You can even create the portals yourself as you battle grotesque enemy bosses in one area and jump back to another to recover. The game casts you as a Cherokee Indian with a number of magical powers such as spirit walking that let you explore the game world as a spirit, and deathwalk which replaces the normal need for intrusive quick saves with an innovative mini-game set between the worlds of the living and the dead. Most exciting moment: Not only is the portal technology amazing but the game's use of gravity is equally inspired with gravity escalators that run up and across ceilings and some excellent zero gravity sections where you pilot spaceship pods and explore a tiny rotating planetoid. Since you ask: Originally intended only for the PC, the Xbox 360 version is being developed by British team Venom Games, who previously created Rocky Legends for Ubisoft, and features an 8 player multiplayer mode. The bottom line: Looks like being one of the top predators in the shoot `em-up world. Harrison Dent

prey the new king of fps July 1, 2006 K. M. D. Woodhouse (united kingdom) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
this game breathes new life into the fps genre, the only fps to purchase before this game was halo 2(this is not a knock at halo, just a knock at all the other fps that didnt try anything new, halo2 is still 1 of my top games of alltime.) however i downloaded the prey 4 level long demo late friday night and all i can say is it has to be played to be believed u can really tell where 3d realms(the creator of duke nukem) has lent there touches to the game. Absolute masterpiece.
NOT for the faint-hearted, weak-stomached, or easily confused... January 20, 2007 J. Wood (Plymouth, UK) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
Prey is perhaps one of the most innovative games I have ever had the pleasure of playing. The spirit-walk aspect brings a slightly greater degree of problem-solving to the game, but above all the wall/ceiling-walk (oh yes... it IS good!) and portal features are what make this game stand out from others in the often same-old-same-old FPS genre. If you're the sort of person who has trouble finding their way to the shops, then approach Prey with caution... without giving too much away, the designers must have shut themselves in a darkened room with a pencil, ruler, piece of paper and licked toads when they came up with the different levels... I actually had to stop playing once in a while to soothe my brain after upside-down fire fights, or after seeing myself walk around a corner in front of me... trust me, it happens. The guns are novel adaptations of the typical weapons found in FPS games: the acid-spray shotgun is a personal fave, while grotesque alien versions of the sniper-rifle, assault rifle and rocket launcher glisten and quiver, often appear much too alive for comfort. The grossometer frequently goes all the way up to 11, not only due to blood (although there is sometimes a LOT), but also the alien environment seems to have, shall we say, OTHER organic parts... Tommy, the main character, is a right old laugh. He's not the most convincing hero (in fact half the time when he's shouting at alien foes he sounds absolutely petrified!), but this just made the game all the more playable... You feel that you're better than your own character... and you can have a jolly good chuckle at him throughout the game... If you're still not convinced how good this game is, then please, PLEASE rent it, if only for the abduction sequence when you first start... the choice of song is tremendous, making it one of the best scenes in gaming history...
Better than halo? June 22, 2006 360 gamer (england) 7 out of 9 found this review helpful
Prey tells the story of Tommy, a Cherokee garage mechanic stuck on a reservation going nowhere. Along with his people, he is abducted to a menacing mothership orbiting Earth, where he sets out to save himself, his girlfriend, and eventually his planet. Having just played through the 45 min to one hour demo available on the xboxlive marketplace i am shocked to say that this game is definetly one of the best games i have played in a while. The fps genre is obviously getting to the point where it is in need of new idears and prey definatly fills the gap in what is the best type of game. prey includes some amazing and origianal features including portals anti gravity walk ways gravity flipping capabilities spirit walking it brings a fresh new view on fps games and i would reccomend it to anyone intresested in a whole new "better than halo" experience
A defence for Prey! July 21, 2006 Mr. B. Shepherd (Northampton, UK) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I don't usually submit reviews about games but I feel that I need to speak up in defence of prey. One of the 'issues' most people have with the game is that its short, 10 hours to finish in total. We all remember Halo 1, 10 hours to complete yet a complete classic, pure genious. Seriously the game on single player was absolutely class. I do not regret paying 40 for the game, I'd rather have a class 10 hours than a rubbish 50 hours. At least I know it was time well spent. The multiplayer aspect is even better than the single player aspect. The variety of achievements, levels and weapons make the game a pure enjoyment to play, I enjoyed it so much I play it for 4 days flat with no breaks at which time the wife told me enough is enough. However, online games need to be played against UK people with a maximum of 4 people, more than this amount or games with Americans involved will cause the game to lag seriously to the point of annoyance. In total the game had points that will be raved on about for a long time, these include the portals, sudden change in gaviety, spirit walking, weapons (leach gun with sun beam - CLASS!), walking on walls and ceilings etc. just brilliant. My only regret in the game is that the vehicle wasnt as good as it could have been, it was a little rubbish. In summary I would highly recommend buying this game, it may not be the longest game ever but at least its memorable! Also there is going to be a sequal so possibly that one will be longer, lets hope they dont make a Halo 2 out of it.
Short, but one hell of a ride. November 12, 2006 Phillip Fry (burgess hill United Kingdom) 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
Prey is a truly great, and original, game. Unlike every other FPS on the 360 Prey is actually different(Unlike Call of Duty 2 or Quake 4). Prey is very innovative, it has a great story and enticing gameplay. the gunplay is basically the same as most other FPS's, but the puzzles are very interesting and complex, although not too challenging. Now on to the thing most reviewers have mentioned, the DOOM 3 comparrison. As far as gameplay goes Prey is by far and away better than DOOM 3 and as for graphics Prey has better lighting effects, better textures and the levels are about three times larger than the larger levels of DOOM 3. All in all Prey is an incredible experience that has an epic feel and a huge amount of originality, and is definitely worth your 40.
