5 out of 5 stars Unreal Tournament 3 - At Last!   July 5, 2008

For years we have been entertained with FPS games on a series of different consoles. It is worth remembering, however, that Unreal Tournament is more or less the 'Adam' of the genre. The original's style and play paved the way for other games to take inspiration from the iconic title, thus giving gamers an enjoyable and memorable experience. The original Unreal title brought plenty of fast-paced FPS action to the table, and those who are familiar with the game's style will be relieved to hear that in that department little has changed with Unreal 3.

After being teased with the unknown official release date in the last few months I felt relieved to finally hold the game I had been heavily anticipating. I personally chose to ignore any gameplay footage from the PS3 version of the game to make my experience a little fresher. Its fair to say that I think I made the right choice. Having played very little of the previous titles on any of the platforms I was hoping that Midway and Epic would give me what i longed for; a good solid shooter. Boy, I got what I wanted.

Playing Call of Duty 4 for a few months made me want something different, and something different is brought to the table with Unreal in the sense of today's FPS titles. It's definately more Quake than COD4, but don't let that potentially put you off, because although Unreal may seem a little limiting in it's game modes it most certainly isn't. Now i've blabbered on I will talk about the game itself.

Offline you are treated to a reasonably long campaign consisting of most of the game modes found online. You assume the role of a soldier (not sure if that is a suitable word, but it seems more appropriate than 'warrior') who has just come back from a bad day at the office after dicing with death on the battlefield. Moments from death he is saved and rejoins his squad to face off against the opposing force in a series of game modes. These modes include team deathmatches, capture that flag with and without vehicles and a mode called 'warfare' which is a little more complicated, but still easy to understand. In warfare the objective is to gain control of a neutral node before the enemy does, then you must take the fight to the enemy power core which is located inside the enemy's base. Simple huh? You also have the choice of completing the campaign both offline and online with friends or complete strangers, aren't you lucky?

Aside from the campaign there is the basis of the game; online. Online modes comprise of 6 different game modes to sink your teeth into with a wide variety of maps, 5 of which exclusive to the Xbox 360 version. While the popularity of the game online is somewhat hard to predict with Call of Duty 4 leading the pack, it is fully deserving to be ranked up there with the best. Unless you are a hardcore Unreal player already, I wouldn't expect to be too good online initially. It may just be me, but i found myself getting my ass handed to me time and time again even thought i consider myself good at online shooters. It's fair to say it takes some getting used to becuase of the pace.

Having said all of this I still feel I have only scratched the surface of what is a great, fun game. Together with an exclusive look at the Gears of War 2 online multiplayer this game, in my opinion, is a real must-buy.

Overall: 9.4/10

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! Back to basics FPS action!   July 4, 2008

What can i say? Really. This is true to it's predecessors; UT3 in a no holds, action packed, fast paced classic first person shooter. Any fps fan could pick this game up and play straight away; if your a fan of the quake series, you will also like this game.

The campaign mode itself has some story elements, but its really just a bucnh of death mathces and capture the flag games; but this isn't a bad thing. This is where the FPS game began. A highly entertaining game, thats great online as well!

If your an FP veteran, go for it. Hell, go for it anyway even if you aint!

To Ross D. Lovie 'Rosco'.....
To say you keep shouting on about people who review games before they've been released, you're the one who commented first and rated it as being of 1-star quality.
BTW, this is from the same people who made Gears of War for christ's sake! Of course it's going to be good, or even better.

first of to anser the quistion posed by ross d whatever, the reson people can know is because they may be in that group of people (like me) who bought the game on pc, alowwing them to make a pretty good read on the qualaty of the finished game.

right! on to the game. the graphics are amazing(but when arent they?) the game play is slick and never to frantic that you lose track and the story is engaging enough.

and with the promise of mods on the console versions this is a real contender for top live game this year(althoug it will have stiff compitision from battilefield and frontlines)
