Great version for the Console. June 15, 2008 Unknown (UK) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
The other reveiws pretty much cover my thoughts on the game. I'm a PC veteran & agree that the easy 'chieftain' level of play can be skipped by those who have played the game before on the PC or those who laready know the control buttons on the gamepad. I've played three games on the easy level and the longest I played, winning via the space race achievement, was 3 hours. (on the old PC version this would of taken days for me to do) I don't know what this RTS/realtime concept is, like Command & Conquer? Civ Rev plays via game turns just like the PC & Playstation versions - you can take as long or as quick as you like to work through the years. This was a quick concern I had when I couldn't grasp the meaning from reviews on other websites etc., but thankfully it plays via the old 'I-go-you-go' method like most boardgames. Enjoyable so far. Hopefully, when I get onto the harder difficulty levels the games will last longer - I couldn't help myself I had to obliterate the Xbox armies of archers and spearmen with my all powerful T34 Soviet tank armies :) Last note - the ICBMs and the space shuttle launches blasting off from your cities and going off into outer space - Jaw dropping when I first saw it.
Play it online June 26, 2008 P. Garnham (U.K) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I agree to some degree with some of the other reviewers who say that its not civ as we know it to be. The Pc game is extremly engaging ,complex ,indepth game that can take days to play and years to master. This new version is different to that game but still retains the addictive nature(one more turn!!) and thought provoking nature of its predecesors. FOr one its a consel game designed and aimed at a new generation of players and the best part of it..... you can play it online with other players from all over the world. I have its great fun and it does'nt take days to complete a game only 3-4 hours. I love Civ 4 and Beyond the sword (There is a new Pc game for the civ veterans coming out in September I have read on there web site) but Revolutions is a revelation, play it online its great fun!!
The game I've been waiting for has finally arrived! June 16, 2008 Stephen Salt (United Kingdom) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
The title is a little misleading, I was not waiting for this game as such but suddenly realised it was available and couldn't get to the demo download fast enough! I've played every version of Civ since thie first. After downloading overnight and playing the next day for just 1 hour I was down the shops getting the full copy - that's just how good it is. I've played games that've been 'ported' from the PC on various consoles (LOTR & C&C3 - Xbox, Discworld - Playstation) and found that the actual interaction is clumsy, using an on-screen cursor (designed for a mouse) to move the characters and interact with objects. BUT this game is not a port from a PC game - repeat THIS GAME IS NOT A PORT FROM A PC VERSION (just for emphasis). This game has been whole written for the console by its legendary creator. Movement is turn based, rather than real time, so you have a much easier time trying to wage war or defent yourself that games like C&C where everything happens everywhere all at once. To do this the troops are moved in squares on the map, one or two per turn (depending on unit) or further on roads. In your turn you can also build new units, building or wonders in your cities. Nothing new for Civ fans. The graphic in this game are quite cartoon like, however based on real people, but there is so much interaction with the other players its incredible. The barbarians, for example, will pop up and tell you 'you destroyed my village - so what, I have more', the opposing teams will also make offers of peace, war and technology transfer. I can't comment on the music as I usually play my own on all games, but the audio effects are high quality. Achievement wise, there are 50 to be had, some of which ae worth only 3G, but there's plenty of oportunity to get them. There's 5 levels of difficulty from easy - Chieftan - to what they describe as insanely hard - Deity - achievements are keyed to victories at each level. I cannot comment on the multiplayer aspect as I do not have Live Gold but there is a 'game of the week' option where you can play a predefined game which is refreshed and downloaded each week and the scores ranked up. In short - if you want to know what it feels like to be a god - this is it, having the power to make peace, destroy and shape the lives of a whole civilisation - wonderfull 6 stars!
great fun June 19, 2008 Mr. P. D. Barnes (uk) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
i have played one of the pc versions years ago, probably the first one. so when i saw this version i bought it on release day. i was not disappointed. It ports very well on to console, the controls are easy, the gameplay is deep and can be very challenging on higher levels. online games make this a long life game. the only downside is it can consume a lot of time. some games go on for 3 hours plus, and if you end up losing it can be quite frustrating. overall probably the best game i have bought this year.
