5 out of 5 stars No One Else Mentions This...   April 20, 2008

You've all played the game before so I won't touch on that. In relation t the four brand new multiplayer maps though. They do NOT come on the game disc, the game disc is exactly the same and the Standard Version.

Another reviewer said when you buy this you save effort and hard-disc space. Wrong. What you get when you buy this is the game, and a leaflet, the leaflet has a code on, you enter the code online, get a code for Xbox Live, enter the new code on Xbox Live and get to download the maps, basically you get 800MS Points in the box.

Don't buy this expecting the new maps to be on the disc.

Firstly, the extra maps "included" with this still have to be physically downloaded (but free) so don't expect to just whack it in and get on with them. They are quite good maps, and make a change from the usual map listings once you've been playing the game for a total of 6 days (144 hours)!

Right, on with the main game. The most stunning thing about this game that you immediately notice is the graphics, they are absolutely unbelieveable and look gorgeous, even on a non-HD tv. On HD, it looks even better. Even when turning your head/camera, the graphics stay as smooth/crisp as ever. The controls are also sublime and are very intuitive.

The single player element to this game is cracking and is an excellent storyline. The levels for each of the missions are brilliantly designed, and offer just the right difficulty curve to keep you hooked and to consistently challenge you. It is great fun, and is definitely worth a couple of replays at higher difficulty levels to get the full experience. The only issue with the single player, as has been mentioned several times before, is that it doesn't last very long. You could easily do the single player campaign in a day. If anything, I think this is a testament to the enjoyability of the single player missions that you don't want to put it down, and would rather carry on playing it till the end!

BUT, multiplayer is where this game is at. Currently, CoD4 is the most played game on Xbox live, and with good reason. It takes all the brilliant graphics, level design and weapons handling and chucks them into an extremely user friendly lobby/server system, which will have you playing in a minute at most. On most of the game modes, you can respawn within a second, which is great when you just want to get on with the fight. Probably the best feature to CoD4 (and FPS as a whole) is the Killcam. This gives you a quick 5 second replay of your death, from your killer's point of view, and is extremely useful in exposing your flaws, things you can improve etc. The other great feature is the ranking system, and the perks/weapons you can unlock as you build up experience. Once you get to the highest level, you can even reset your rank (this is called prestige)and start again with the basic weapons to work your way up again, but with a unique rank badge for that level of prestige (10 in total). This only resets your rank and weapon availability, your total kills/score is still kept on the leaderboard.

The only downside to CoD4 is that it doesn't have the Rainbow Six Vegas feature of cover behind a wall (and peeking around/blind fire) if it had that, this game would be 100% perfect.

If you haven't bought this game by now, what are you doing? Get involved ASAP, before they release CoD5 and everyone jumps ship to that!

5 out of 5 stars Definately Deserves its Game of the Year Title....   August 16, 2008

After having the previous two installments of Call of Duty 2 & 3 on Xbox 360 which were both set in world war 2, I was at first, a little dubious about the switch to modern day. I love WW2 games, CoD 3 was a shining example of a classic WW2 title, epic, cinematic battles, great visuals, and a fantastic array of weaponry really set the game apart from its competitors. Online is where Cod 3 excelled. It was awesome. Enough Said. Number 4 has a lot to live up to.

On to the new version. Firstly the campaign. It is nothing short of epic. Every level is a masterpiece in engaging the player in the surroundings and sucking them into enormous firefights that are truly spectacular. The atmosphere in the levels is very intense and leads to an extremely dramatic conclusion at the end. Overall, the campaign is, admittedly, short, however, if you jump in on the harder difficulties you'll find it a lot more challenging, especially veteran difficulty.

Online play is where this game excels. With the ability to create custom classes and upgrade weaponry with scopes and camouflages, it truly makes for an epic experience. This is, without doubt, the best online game i have ever played, beating gears of war pretty much hands down which is one hell of an accomplishment as gears is still one of my favorite online games.

Overall, the Graphics are stunning, one of the best on any console. The campaign is short but incredibly sweet. But online is where this game truly excels. Be warned, if you buy this title, you won't be playing anything else for months!

5 out of 5 stars Game of the Year - Single or Multi Player   April 4, 2008

This was the fifth game I got for my XBox (bought about 4 months ago), and I have not played anything else since. I have even bought other games and I have shelved them for later as this is just SO addictive.

Play it in single player mode first. It has a good story line, which rings almost too true to current events in the World. The in game graphics are the most photo-realistic I have ever seen and some of the effects such as smoke, heat haze, depth of field and blurred focus make it even more real. The single player mode is fairly long (well, it took me a while anyway!) and leaves you wanting more...

That is where the multiplayer comes in. So you have learned how to aim and shoot etc. But now see how you compare with real opponents who can take a few bullets just like you. I had not played any multiplayer before on the xBox so maybe there are other games out there as good, but I became an instant addict! I wait for my wife to go to bed each night so I can go on line for an hour or two!!! I am actually rubbish (rarely in the top half of the leader board when the games end), but it doesn't matter. You find yourself playing against your own personal best, and constantly trying to get to the next rank in a 'bogus' army! It also gets better as you learn each of the many maps (where to hide, snipe, or throw grenades etc) and unlock the different weapons and perks.

So in Summary, what makes it the game of the year? Great graphics, excellent gameplay and lasting fun which I still don't know will ever wear off!

If you already own it I have probably just validated your own opinion, and if not... just buy it!

(One caution is that the graphics and realism make it unsuitable for kids. They would no doubt disagree, but as a parent I wouldn't want my kids playing this until they were old enough to understand what war is)

as my name suggests, this game is really addictive, i originally bought it for the single player as i did not have xbox live, the campaign mode is brilliant in itself, maybe a little short but its fantastic, and of course the level 'All Ghillied Up' is most probably the best lever for a shooter in all time.

i know have xbox live and i have not regreted it since. I belive this game is mainly multy-player, it is just SO addictive, whenever ive got spare time i go on this, it is just amazing.

Cost of game : 30 Usual cost of extra maps : 7.50(ish) cost of xbox live : 5 a month Cost of killing your friends and proving your the best? : Priceless
