5 out of 5 stars For me - better than Rome Total War   June 24, 2005

Unlike previous reviewers, I found this to be much more rewarding than RTW - the main reason being that the management side of the game is much more in-depth. I do like certain parts of RTW's system, particularly the family line, but much prefer the politics and diplomacy of Imperial Glory - aspects which really capture the era.

The battles too are graphically far superior and, when coupled with a rousing soundtrack and excellent voice acting, really bring the Napoleonic period to life.

If you're a fan of the Napoleonic era, or just strategy games in general, I'd deinitely recommend a purchase. It's the best strategy game I've played of recent times.

5 out of 5 stars A good game to play for fun   February 26, 2007

This is a game I bought on Spec as I am interested in the Napoleonic era. Since my last game of that period was Battleground Waterloo, I thought this was a fun game to play. From a gamer's point of view, you might not enjoy the game, but for me it was fantastic. It is in the same style of Total War but set in the age of Napoleon which was great for me. I got well hooked on it and am now starting to play Total War Rome and Shogun again. You have your 3D battlefield, 2D campaign interactive map and 3D Naval battle with the tutorial, quick battle and campaign etc.
It is a 3D strategy game set in a virtual world with views above the battle or at soldiers height and a above (satellite map) view of the battlefield with your army in one colour and the enemy's in another. You have to keep your eyes peeled on a map in the top left corner of the screen as you can get attacked from different points, so if you concentrate too much on one side of the battle, you can lose your men on another flank or centre.
From a detailed point of view, the uniforms are limited to one type of uniform for units like, sharpshooters, guards, Hussars, Light Cavalry etc and the Artillery units can unlimber and limber very quickly as well as turn etc. Also you have to physically click to attack etc, so if you don't see them attacking you from behind, you miss the action. The guns from the ships are not accurate either as it was hard to sink ships during this period (and would not make sense to sink ships or they would not get their bounty) in the game, however, it is easy.
It has it's faults in this area but no game is like real life or no one would play it.

Despite this, I found it fun to play and addictive.

Well worth buying and playing-if you love Total War, you will love this game.

5 out of 5 stars Good game   September 3, 2006

From the historic point of view most of the game is quite accurate although the morale doesnt make much of a difference in the battle.

If you're comparint this game to Rome: Total War as it does look similar, the main advantage of this game is that it has thought through naval battles in which you can actually fight instead of hoping to take them by numbers.

And although it lacks in some points, in others like naval battles and technology it's a good game.

5 out of 5 stars Imperial Glory 4, Total War 0.   October 4, 2007

I can't agree with other reviewers that this game comes off badly compared to Total War (Rome & Mediaeval 2). I've tried the Total War games and find the strategy side strictly for children and the battles neither here nor there compared to IG.

With Imperial Glory the strategy side is much more absorbing and I find the battles fascinating and visually impressive. People have complained about the AI of the units, but I think they miss that you can set units to automatic attack, so troops of lancers won't just sit quietly on their horses while an enemy line of infantry mows them down!

I leave the sea battles to the AI - I tried learning how to fight these but couldn't get to grips with it.

When this came out, the gaming mags said it was a few improvements off being a truly great game. I think its fine as it is, but it is a shame the developers didn't stick with this and release an update. There's much more you could do with this in addition to redesigning it for other periods. Increase the detail of the strategy side, add different units, add the ability to play as countries apart from the five empires, etc.

My only complaint would be that, as an inexperienced (and older than average) gamer, it took me ages to work out how everything was done. The manual and tutorial, as is common, tells you WHAT you can do but rarely do they tell you HOW to do it.

That aside, this and Football Manager are the only two games I deem worthy to spend great swathes of my spare time on.

5 out of 5 stars Looks to surpass Rome Total War   April 29, 2005

On playing the demo and marvelling at the screenshots and stirring musical score I suspect this could be a threat to the Total War franchise which seemed to have gone stale with Rome.

The battle landscapes are beautifully rendered rolling hills where trees, farmland and buildings can be exploited and occupied. The artillery looks a vast improvement as does the speed of the battles which are intense, dramatic and chaotic just as battles of the period were.

The naval battles are the piece de resistance adding an immensely rewarding twist to the formula. Pyro studios have done a superb job from scratch and deserve every acolade I'm sure they will get. Buy.
