Amazon.co.uk Preview The last Tomb Raider game was of such an awesomely poor quality it seemed quite likely it would bury the once mighty franchise once and for all. Creating a sequel to that can have been no mean feat but from what has been so far it looks like new developer Crystal Dynamics (they did Soul Reaver 2 and Project: Snowblind) might have pulled it off. Legend is very much a case of back to basics, with no wandering round deserted European capitals engaging in inane conversations and having to earn experience points before you can kick a door down. Instead it looks and plays much more like the first few games, and indeed has been created with input from one of the original creators - who has never had a hand in a sequel up till now. Combat is back to being only around a third of the game with everything else centred on platform jumping and puzzle solving. To help this there's a canny new movement system that allows Lara to jump onto and grab objects at an angle, so there's none of that awkward grid based movement of the earlier games. This is also the first Tomb Raider to have a proper psychics engine with lots of the puzzles revolving around movement and the use of Lara's natty new magnetic grappling hook. Even Lara herself has been revamped so that she looks more up-to-date and yet still reminiscent of the old angular design. Assuming they can keep things interesting for a whole game this should see Tomb Raider regain its place as one of gaming's most important titles. -- Harrison Dent This preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

AMAZING !!!! February 22, 2007 A. Alam (UK) 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
WOW this game is amazing "LARA IS BACK" and this time she is even more suicidal than ever. First of all, all the "tomb raider" content is still there the puzzles the cocky British one liners and the wonderful environments. Gameplay is great your either jumping from cliff to cliff, hanging off frozen ledges, diving out of falling airplanes, chasing a train at full speed on a Ducati motorbike or diving from waterfalls. There are even some very nice interactive cut scenes so you'll never leave the edge of your seat. The controls are a little iffy with a keyboard, I would recommend a Saitek controller, oh and the camera angles are Cinematically Awesome. The Graphics are really impressive although cannot compete with titles like FEAR where you need a 50 Graphics cards and 8 CPU's to run the game. The scenery is quite colourful and attractive. Stroyline is awesome and all falls into place at the end. All in all this game is great although it ended too quickly :( and I wish there was more to it but nonetheless this is a must have ! OH and some people may have problems when using an updated Windows XP, there is a update (that can easily be removed) that crashes the game. Awesome game 9/10
Lara Croft - A Natural Evolution June 2, 2007 Mark R. Bannister (London, England) 4 out of 5 found this review helpful
A visual feast, a storyline worthy of a Hollywood movie, a soundtrack worthy of an Oscar. This is the natural evolution of the Lara Croft games, as computer graphics have become more and more photo realistic, so the characters, situations and locations have to become more believable. We are less gamers and more film directors, cinematographers, positioning our camera in the best place to create a visually stunning scene. I love Tomb Raider Legend. This is Lara Croft brought bang up to date. I was drawn inexorably into the story. Some people have complained about the number of cut scenes in this game, but I enjoyed it all the more for them. I was completely immersed in the plot, and emotionally touched by the characters, and the inner struggles that Lara was contending with. Once you get used to it, Legend is a dream to control. The major drawback is that you have a fixed 360 degree view all around Lara, at a fixed distance. This meant that there were many occasions when Lara just got in the way of your view. Also the camera had a nasty habit of jumping forwards to avoid obstacles, which broke the otherwise smooth flow of the graphics. These problems were partially mitigated by using the binoculars, although better camera control would have improved matters greatly. I found the puzzles in Legend generally too easy to solve, and the locations too linear - there was only one path to follow, and items you were supposed to iteract with stood out too obviously from the background. The locations were also too small, and the game over too quickly. I needed more, much more! The interactive cut scenes didn't work I thought, but the chase sequences on motorbikes were good fun and provided welcome breaks. Combat in Legend was a thrill, I felt in control, and that tactics mattered, and I felt rewarded. The gameplay was superb, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment, and highly recommend this to anyone who wants to see a textbook example of how computer games and movies are converging. For graphics, music, plot and pure entertainment value; I rate this higher than Tomb Raider Anniversary. However, Anniversary has bigger locations and better puzzles. Different games for different moods. I'm proud to have both in my collection. How long before the sequel to Legend ?! I can't wait!! If they took the best of Legend and the best of Anniversary to make the Legend sequel, now that would be a game worth waiting for.....
This game is not all that bad October 1, 2006 Mr. Bh Burnham-packham (Oxon) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have just recently bought an ATI Radeon 1900XT and with everything turned on at 1280 by 1024 (yes including full AA and next gen content enabled) it looks very nice and runs smoothly, I chose this over getting an Xbox 360. I have also played this on the Xbox 360 and must admit there is no difference in graphics quality. As other reviews mention controls, I have not tried playing this with a keyboard and mouse but to be honest this game was not designed for it, play this with a ps2 style controller or an Xbox 360 controller on your pc and it will feel much better believe me. If you do want to map your triggers to buttons then I suggest downloading a program called joytopad.exe and mapping the trigger axis to a keyboard button or mouse button, it's not the game's fault but microsoft's poor driver for it. My game now plays just as well as the Xbox 360 version. I have played completed all the Tomb Raiders and it has redeemed itself I think from AOD. This game I must admit is a bit easy to complete, the games do seem to get easier and easier but it makes up for that with very nice next gen graphics. The interactive cutscenes are also very amusing and overall it has a much stronger storyline than any of the others. The easyness of completing this game is there because they are trying to appeal and bring in a new generation of gamers new to the Tomb raider series. I hope they bring back the original puzzle complexity from previous titles with the graphics from this one for the next title and that would help re-appeal to hardcore fans.
Superb - But rather short! April 27, 2006 John Dempsey (UK) 4 out of 7 found this review helpful
The games is excellent on the PC, the controls are really fluid. Seems like a few people on the PS2 have been having problems with the controls but on the PC its awesome. Well done Crystal Dynamics make the next one a bit longer and a bit harder and all will be well again in the Tomb Raider series. Excellent game, if you like the first two Tomb Raiders you love this.
Back to a winning formula April 7, 2006 V. Warrington 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
Rejoice! After a number of wrong turns it seems that Lara is back on track with Legend. Going back to the formula which made the first two Tomb Raider games so sucessful, Eidos have changed developers and made a cracking game. The gameplay is back to what it should be (raiding tombs, solving puzzles etc) and graphically Lara's looking superb. If you've become disollusioned with the franchise, do yourself a favour and pick up this latest version - you'll rediscover why you fell in love with Ms. Croft in the first place.
