BIG and fast!!! August 17, 2008 Chris J. Molloy (Kent, England) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
Every review for this product tells you it's big, but not HOW big, search on-line and somewhere you might actually find the dimensions, but when you're listening to the people on this site you'll be thinking, maybe they're exaggerating....THEY'RE NOT. You might even be thinking, 'How big could it be?', it's BIG. But even if you do know the dimensions it's not a simple case of ensuring you have enough space to contain the grill, when you have the grill closed, the handle overhangs the bottom of the grill by 12cm, and when you open it, the lid overhangs the back by an extra 4cm, so if you don't want the handle poking out over the edge of any worksurfaces and you want the lid to open onobstructed you'll need more space. However, if you simply want to be able to open the grill unobstructed whilst the feet of the grill sit safely on a worksurface and you don't mind the handle poking out over the edge of the worksurface then you'll need a little less space, although not much less as you still have to accomodate the drip tray which stands independently in front of the grill, and obviosuly it wouldn't be particularly safe, especially if you have kids. (D)=Depth (W)=width (h)=height (D)x44cm (w)x50cm (h)x15cm - With the lid closed (D)x42cm (w)x50cm (h)x44cm - With the lid open (D)x54cm (w)x50cm (h)x44cm - With grill physically unobstructed (D)x49cm (w)x50cm (h)x44cm - With handle sticking out from worksurface Last thing you have to consider space-wise is this thing gets HOT, so having a space exactly the sizes mentioned above will probably end up in you burning down your house or at least causing heat damage to whatever surrounds it. (D)x55cm (w)x70cm (h)x80cm - For safe practical, totally unobstructed use Right, so how good is it, it's very good, and quick too, the grilling surface measures 47cm x 24cm and the amount of grease that drips into the tray is unbelievable, first thing I cooked was 8 quarter pounders, they cooked in about 10 minutes and despite the amount of grease that dripped off of them they were still very succulent, which I find often isn't the case with an oven. It can cook foods up to 3cm thick which covers most Chicken Breasts, it cooks from thawed as well as frozen and like I said it's lightning fast and probably doesn't use up anywhere near as much energy as an oven, so it's a money saver and more environmentally friendly. My only gripe is that the grill is supposed to cook things evenly, but unfortunately the majority of the pressure when the lid is closed is put on the front of the grill causing anything you cook at the front to cook faster than the things at the back. I've not tried it yet, but I should imagine if you're cooking two thicknesses of food, if you put the thicker ones at the back they should cook at the same speed as those at the front due to the pressure being placed on the thicker items first.
Great for barbecues! May 27, 2008 Smallvillenews (U.K.) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I ordered one of these in a bid to cut down the amount of fat in our food, for quickness and for the amount it will cook in one go. This grill is huge. You need a good space to use it in, so before you order one, make sure you have plenty of work surface to use it on. It will easily hold and cook up to 9 chicken breats at a time if not more and I have used it for barbecues and cooked 10 quarter pounders at once and loads of sausages. If you don't like the traditional barbecue over a flame this is a great alternative, as it is quick and you don't have to mess around with charcoal and flames. As it is on a fine tilt, any fat drips down onto the drip tray (2 are provided) and it removes loads. I was amazed at just how much fat can still drip out of a lean piece of chicken breast! Everything tastes great when it isn't dripping with grease too! I like to use the grill for it's quickness too. When switched on it takes a couple of minutes for the grill plates to heat up, indicated by a little red light, which switches off when it is ready. Then you add your food too the bottom plate and close the lid down again, on average it takes about 5 - 10 minutes to cook a chicken breast, be that 1 or 9 at once! Although it cooks without turning, I usually do turn half way through cooking for an even finish (I do this because the bottom plate has ridges). So within minutes your meat is cooked and ready for serving however you choose! The lid is loosely fitted to accomodate thicker slices of meat, so it will easily raise or lower to the meat, depending on how thick your meat is or if you are grilling oddly shaped vegetables, which you can also grill on this. I was sorry to read the 1 star review, as I have bought 2 of these myself, one for my family and one as a gift and we have never had a problem with either of them. So it is possible that was a one off and just a problem with that one, which can happen with anything, unfortunately for that buyer it was their grill. My mother also has a smaller George Forman grill and has never experienced any problems with that either.
