Excellent product at a bargain price November 23, 2008 Ms. A. Mahoney (London, England) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I'd been looking for a sunrise alarm clock for some time, but had always found them quite pricey, usually around the 60 mark. However, when I read the reviews for this clock and saw how much cheaper it was, I decided to give it a go...and I'm glad I did! It was very easy to set up, I could probably have managed it without the instructions, but they were very clear and helpful nonetheless. The light starts to come on 20 minutes before your alarm time, giving you a chance to wake up gradually. There is also a choice of sounds to wake up to (these are optional, you can use just the light), including 2 different birds, cicidas, ocean, a melody or the radio (FM). These start at your alarm time and get gradually louder (up to a volume you preset) over 5 minutes. There is also a sleep setting, so you can go to sleep to any of the sounds or radio, which will automatically fade out and switch off after 30 minutes. You can also use the lamp as a normal bedside lamp with the on/off switch - the light is also dimmable in this mode. It hasn't made me want to leap out of bed immediately, but I do feel wide awake and much less likely to roll over and go back to sleep! On the first morning I set my old "normal" alarm to go off 5 minutes after the sunrise alarm, just in case - I was on my way out of bed when it went off, and I actually recoiled in horror at the horrible beeping sound! I would highly recommend this alarm to anyone who has trouble getting out of bed and doesn't want to shell out for the more expensive clocks available. As far as I can tell it performs just as well, and in fact has some functions that others don't - the radio and nature sounds, for example. Overall, I'm very impressed and feel like I've bagged a bargain.
Pleasantly surprised October 31, 2008 flanners (birmingham uk) 17 out of 17 found this review helpful
I was a bit wary of buying this product as it's so much cheaper than others of its kind. However it's easy to use (clear instructions and simple to set the clock etc), does the job it's supposed to, and has a nice range of natural noises (waves, birds, cicadas) as well as the option of the radio to wake up to. It doesn't look cheap and the buttons are quite sturdy and click satisfyingly. The clock display is easy to see in the dark without being overpowering / too bright. The only reservations I have are that it's quite big (check the dimensions before buying), and if you're in the uk you'll need to buy a europe to uk adaptor plug as well (it may say this somewhere in the description but if so i missed it). Overall I was very pleasantly surprised.
Good product with minor usability issues January 7, 2009 David Hall (Stevenage, UK) My girlfriend bought me one of these for Christmas. On the whole it's been a very good alarm clock - you still wake up tired in the morning (it's not a miracle cure for that!) but not abruptly so the whole experience seems a lot more pleasant. However as other reviewers have mentioned, it does have some minor usability issues; 1. The buttons are all over the place, some on the left and some on the right which mean you have to turn the alarm clock round to see what you're pressing. You do get used to where the frequently-used buttons are, and all the buttons you're likely to use when waking up are thankfully at the front of the unit, but it could be simpler. 2. There's no way of switching the alarm clock on and off quickly, you have to cycle through the available alarm sounds until you select the "Alarm Off" sound. A bit annoying if you wake up before the alarm goes off, or don't want it to go off at weekends, but you can live with it. 3. Some of the "natural sounds" are very repetitive, especially the birdsong one which loops for literally a couple of seconds and rapidly got very annoying. I've settled on the woodland one which is more like five seconds long. Still, the melody tone isn't too bad and there's always the radio to wake up to. 4. Not strictly to do with this product, but when my girlfriend ordered it it was delivered from Pixmania who charge a frankly extortionate 8 for delivery which adds quite a large amount onto the cost of the product. Generally it is a good product at a very good price for a product of this type (which judging by other reviews all have their peculiar flaws). I'd recommend it, although it will be interesting to see if there is a "LYS v3" version that addresses some of these problems in the future.
Does what it says on the box January 2, 2009 Dr. A. DEWITT (london UK) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This sunrise alarm clock is good value for money and it certainly performs well with a nice dimming light and nature sounds. I was a bit dissapointed with the effect as I still felt tired when it woke me up but that would be the same with any sunrise alarm and not specific to this model. The downside is that this clock has some really annoying usability (ease of use) problems: The time can only be visible at eye level so when Im standing up I cant really see it. There is no easy way to turn the alarm on or off e.g. if you wake up before the alarm and want to stop it going off - you have to turn the light off and seperately cycle through all the sounds until it says 'off' - which will wake up a sleeping partner anyway. The buttons are split on 2 sides of the lamp so you have to keep twisitng it round to see what youre pressing. Despite these flaws it is definitely worth a try for 44
