5 out of 5 stars As good as a shop bought coffee.... with practice   April 22, 2008

I have had more basic espresso machines before, and thought them great... but never up to Costa or Nero. Finally my old machine erupted spurts of hot water though the kitchen and gave its last puff of smoke, so I decided to spend some decent money on a machine.... people may rate this as a 'good value' machine but anything over 100 in my book is not a cheap machine, its a thing of quality!
Anyway, I was not disappointed, my first espresso from it had a lovely crema, my second was watery... not enough coffee.... each one from then on gets better and better. Its true that the milk frother is left to drip milk on your work surface but thats minor compared to ease of use, the ability to put in cold water and have hot coffee in seconds, making coffee again and again for however many people want it, just like in a coffee shop!

I love this machine. if like me you like a mug of coffee the measurements take some working out and you have to remove the tray. When frothing milk, leave the mug underneath and lay a damp cloth underneath as the coffee will keep dripping for a bit. I know this all sounds rather anoying but for a cappaccino with an inch and a half head it is worth it. You also get 18 pods with it that are over 5 in some shops. the only down side is that it is not designed for jugs.

I bought this machine after reading reviews for machines in it's price range. It has a stainless steel boiler & takes both ese pods ( Illy is one choice!!) and ground coffee. I wanted the option to use ground coffee but wanted on the whole to use an easy pod system. This offers both & the pods are quality coffee brands like Illy and not hard to get hold of now. More brands are bringing out ese pods too. They are so easy & clean & tidy to use!

I wasn't successful at using the machine at first as initially I used ground coffee and forgot to prewarm cups etc. However, after a couple of goes I have it down to a fine art & it's easy & very very fast.

I also use filtered water. Figured makes a better cup of coffee & saves descaling as much.

The machine pre warms first- turn on, put water through the system twice when the light is on by pressing a button. This is all done in probably less than minute, takes less or same time than other machines like Tassimo. I use this preheat to warm the cups, vital!!! I let the water go through to the cup, therefore preheating it. If doing more than one I let a bit of hot water go into each cup & put them up on the cup warmer. Just before the cup has it's turn for the pod I tip out the hot water.

Then I pop in a ese pod into the holder, press button, light goes out after about 20 seconds which is how long you need for the pod/espresso so I just go by the light. It goes out & I turn off. DONE!

If going cappaccino- I turn on the steamer button, give it a few seconds & then turn on the arm a bit & release the hot water that it initially seems to chuck out into a spare cup & then pop the jug under for foaming. I'll admit it's good most of the time but now & again I'm not as successful as I usually am. The froth is good & looks good too but not as impressive as I've had at some good restaurants. It's good enough though & I'm fussy. Leaves a good clinging foam around the cup when you've finished.

As I make them, if more than one, I pop them back up on the cup warmer- how handy!

If you want one...buy it now...it's just dropped 22 since last week!!

The coffee maker is a nice looking piece of kit with a good pack of accessories and some Lille ESE coffee pods included also. I have found the machine very easy to use and easy to keep clean with nice touches such as a thumb clip to stop the filter dropping out when you tap out the coffee grounds after use.

There is a quick guide to making espresso and cappuccino and the initial results were good. With some fine ground Lavazza coffee I got a lovely crema on the espresso and the milk frother does a fine job too. Both the boilers get up to heat very quickly and the warming plate on the top works very well.

My only "complaint" is the milk frother steam arm that is too far over to allow a cup to sit underneath it and catch the drips once the milk has been heated but can't swing back over the drip tray...so it drips milk down the side of the drip tray and it makes a bit of a mess. You just need to be careful and wipe up afterwards. Keep it on a tray if you'll be using it on a porous surface.

Other than that...for the price I think it is a great little machine and is producing really lovely cups of coffee!

4 out of 5 stars A bit messy but delicious coffee   October 6, 2008

I bought this when it cost about 115 pounds about 5 months ago - the price seems to vary a lot over time.

Initially I wanted a dual coffee maker: filter and espresso, but these machines are so large so I decided to get an expresso maker and use a cafetiere for filter - an idea which has worked well so far. This is a really nice looking machine and quite small which is a plus. It does take a little getting used to, but once you have done it a couple of times, it's easy.

The coffee it produces is delicious with a great crema, the milk is hot and frothy. However, it does seem to drip (coffee and milk spouts) but it's really not a big deal - coffee makers all need cleaning after use anyway so a couple extra wipes with a cloth is not a problem.

One word of caution: the first time I washed the removable base to wash it, I sliced my finger open quite deeply on the metal grid - the edges are very sharp.

Overall a nice little machine that makes good coffee and doesn't cost a fortune.
